Democrat Campaigns on ‘Working Families Guarantee’ for Florida

Posted

A statewide Democrat is campaigning on a “working families guarantee” for Florida with a lot of bold promises.

Florida Democratic candidate Angie Nixon, who is running against Republican Senator Ashley Moody, is pledging to fight for the “working families guarantee” which includes:

  • Medicare for All
  • Free Childcare
  • Free Paid Family and Sick Leave
  • National Rent Freeze and Moratorium on Evictions for up to two years
  • Universal jobs program with inflation-adjusted wages

The Florida Democrat says the campaign platform can be funded by taxing billionaires “so that everyone pays their fair share,” stopping money from being spent on overseas wars, and getting big money out of politics.

Republican Ashley Moody says Angie Nixon is a socialist and this election is a defining moment for the direction of Florida and the country.

Angie Nixon said she will fight for Medicare for All that covers every person in America: free at the point of service, with no premiums, no deductibles, no copays, and no surprise bills. The Democrat wants comprehensive coverage, including dental, vision, hearing, mental health and substance use treatment, reproductive and maternity care, and prescription drugs. She wants to cancel existing medical debt, wiping it off credit reports for good, and ban debt collectors from coming after patients for medical bill. Angie Nixon said she supports Senator Bernie Sanders’ bipartisan-backed Medical Debt Cancellation Act. She also wants paid family and medical leave for every worker in America, guaranteed by law.

Nixon also said universal, high-quality child care and pre-kindergarten should be for every family, regardless of income, capping costs so no family pays more than a small share of their income.

Among other priorities, the Florida Democratic candidate is proposing a 5% annual wealth tax on billionaires. “I support Senator Sanders’ Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act, which would apply only to net worth above $1 billion — hitting fewer than 1,000 people in the entire country,” Nixon’s campaign site states. “Independent economists estimate it would raise roughly $4.4 trillion over ten years without raising taxes by a single dollar on anyone worth less than $1 billion.”

She is also calling for direct relief for working families, funded by that revenue, including direct payments to households earning under $150,000 a year.

“The socialist label was not applied to Nixon by Republicans. She chose it herself by joining the Democratic Socialists of America,” the Florida Republican Party stated. “Her record and platform leave little room for interpretation: eliminate capitalism, abolish the U.S. Senate, abolish ICE, impose a national rent freeze, eliminate private health insurance, and advance positions that are openly anti-Israel and hostile toward law enforcement.”
